"Creating an effective Eco-Schools Network"

Sheffield has identified schools as key community champions in helping the city address the growing challenge of climate change. In 2004 there were no registered Eco-Schools in Sheffield; today over half the city's 200 schools have registered and over 70 have awards. This workshop will look at how Sheffield supports its schools and will give you the opportunity to share your experiences.

"Outdoor Learning / Nature Deficit Disorder"

With recent studies suggesting that three quarters of children have never played 'tag' or 'hopscotch', 'Nature Deficit Disorder' is of increasing concern in the education sector.

Eco and Outdoor Classrooms can add a new dimension to schools and, by using sustainable and environmentally-friendly materials, can inspire and motivate pupils, as well as providing psychological benefits to ADHD sufferers through direct nature experiences.

In this workshop we discuss evidence that they are improving students' academic achievements and behaviour as well as the reported positive impacts on motivation, productivity, creativity and their understanding of environmental matters. We will share case studies of best practice and suggestions for future developments.

"Meat Free Mondays and Beyond"

This workshop will explore the issues around the concept of meat free school meals. We will discuss what is perceived to be meat free and the environmental issues around the meat free choices we make. We will discuss questions such as

• Is fish meat free
• Are we over reliant on dairy products when looking at meat free choices
• Do we make enough use of local seasonal vegetables
• Do we use too much intensively reared meat in school meals

"Green Flag Ambassadors - small steps to success"

An Ambassador Eco-School is one which has completed in-depth work on all nine Eco-Schools topics, ensured sustainability is embedded into the curriculum and has successfully delivered change in the culture of the school. In this workshop an Ambassador school will share their experiences and showcase how they have achieved success.

"The Walk to School Campaign"

In this workshop Living Streets will look at the benefits of walking to both children's health and to the environment. They will discuss how the Walk to School campaign links into Eco-Schools and how schools can encourage more children to walk to school. There will be an interactive element to this workshop and an opportunity for children and adults to share their ideas.

In this workshop Waste Watch will explore how to take a strategic approach minimising waste in your school as well as discussing the importance of not looking at environmental issues like waste in isolation from also looking at how we can improve broader wellbeing for children. The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and Sheffield Ranger Service join forces in this workshop to showcase how outdoor learning can motivate and energise young people as they learn about the outdoors, themselves and each other.
